| VACUUM PROCESSING SYSTEMS
SELECTED BY ROCHESTER TECHNICAL SCHOOL
Vacuum Processing Systems (VPS), East Greenwich, Rhode Island,
has been selected to install its new and patented VCN ™
Technology System at The New York State Pollution Prevention
Institute (NYSP21) located at the Rochester Institute of Technology
(RIT) in Rochester, NY.
Vacuum Cycle Nucleation (VCN) relies on disruptive agitation
to remove submicron particulate matter, oils, greases, debris,
etc. from contaminated parts and components in a controlled
vacuum chamber where the cleaning agent is recaptured from
an airless chamber, which produces dry parts.
According to Eugene Park, Assistant Director of Technical
Programs at NYSP21, "Since the Vacuum Cycle Nucleation
(VCN) process has already demonstrated the ability to thoroughly
and effectively clean and etch different kinds of manufactured
parts using less toxic chemicals, the VCN process can be considered
a true pollution prevention technology. NYSP21 will set up
the VCN test unit at the brand new laboratories in the RIT
Golisano Institute of Sustainability."
Under Dr. Park's direction, the VCN cleaning process will
be used to evaluate samples from various New York State manufacturers
who are looking to reduce dependence on toxic and expensive
chemicals while maintaining or even improving surface treatment
performance. The NY industry sectors that can potentially
benefit from using VCN cleaning include metal finishing, medical
devices, and micro
electronics. Additionally, various applied research programs
are also planned to validate and investigate different surface
treatment applications like plating and coating.
Tests have shown the VPS cleaning system has reduced processing
time , rejection rates, is completely automated and can great
ly reduce chemistry consumption due to chemical activity being
applied at the surface being cleaned.
The mission of NYSP21 is to make New York State more sustainable
for workers, the public, the environment, and the economy
through 1) reductions in toxic chemical use 2) the efficient
use of raw materials, energy and water and 3) reductions in
emissions to the environment and waste generation. Integral
parts of NYSP21 include direct technical assistance to NY
businesses and applied R&D.
